I was sorting some of Grandma’s papers and I came across a very old news paper clipping [1952] about Grandpa Marland's retirement.
He joined the firm in 1912: Seventy-seven years old Mr Harry (Lucky) Marland who has given up the Chairmanship and directorship of Griffith Hughes the Salford manufacturing chemist who make Kruschen Salts. He was born in Oldham of working class parents. His father George was draper. At the age of 12 Harry got his first job at 5 shillings a week, 9 years later he became an assistant advertising Manager to a London firm.
At the age of 24 he earned £500 year at 26 £2000. At 37 he invested his savings, to become a director of Griffith Hughes.
Harry travelled to every country in the world except Russia. During the war Mr Marland lent the greater part of his fortune to the state interest free for the duration.

The figure in the banister is said to represent Harry Marland.
